1989 Rolex Submariner Reference 5513 W/ Box & Papers

Why This Watch Matters

The 5513 is one of the most iconic Submariner references, but this model is the much less often encountered “transitional” 5513, with a glossy rather than matte dial. It is in absolutely top-drawer condition, and comes full-set with boxes and all papers. If you’ve been hunting for a really superb 5513, you can stop looking.

The Full Story

The reference 5513 is a much sought after reference. This particular model was made in 1989 and is in exemplary condition, with its slick black glossy dial and very sharp case. There's no crazing to the dial, all edges are clean and crisp; overall, this is one of the cleanest 5513s we’ve seen. This later version is desirable because it is the transitional model between the 5513 and the 14060. The 5513 you see here has the double line, feet-first dial, and the white-gold-surrounded indexes characteristic of the 14060, but the Plexiglass crystal used in the earlier 5513s. The bracelet is in excellent condition, and this watch still has the case back sticker intact as well - we don’t think it’s ever been opened. Additionally, this watch is complete with boxes and papers. We do recommend, as with all vintage dive watches, that you don’t dive with it unless the seals are replaced (and of course pressure testing is essential), but as an example of a near-flawless transitional 5513, we also think that this is about as good as it gets. Simply an irresistibly attractive vintage Submariner.

What we Love and What You Should Know

All we can say about this watch is that it is awesome (a word we don’t use lightly). It is in fantastic condition and appears to have never been opened (which is why there’s no image of the movement). The case is in amazing shape, with no scratches or scuffs and razor sharp lugs. The bracelet looks like it has never been worn and is equally as sharp, with no stretching. It is also full length, further indicating that it may be unworn (as the bracelet was never sized). The hands have some light spotting and the crystal appears to have some light scratches to the bottom left quarter. It comes with the original box and papers; note that the reference 5513 by nature does not hold any Chronometer certification, here the Chronometer papers of our Datejust invited themselves on the last picture but they are not included with this already very full set.
